Achieving for Children: providing training and development opportunities

Achieving for Children provide a wide range of continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities to the children’s workforce through face to face training days, e-learning, workshops, network meetings, briefings and INSET days. Access to the learning offer ensures staff have the skills, knowledge and expertise to work with and support children, young people and their families.

Applications and the booking process
All training opportunities are advertised on AfC CPD Online (www.afccpdonline.co.uk). If you are a new user please email training@achieivngforchildren.org.uk to register.

  • to make a booking you can request a place at the relevant training event via AfC CPD Online
  • your manager will be asked to approve your booking. Please ensure you have the support and agreement of your line manager or Finance Officer before reserving a place on a CPD programme (self-employed colleagues will need to override this process).
  • a request for a place must be made at least seven working days prior to the date that the event is due to take place, as decisions regarding course viability will be made at this time.
  • you will receive a confirmation email and a reminder email prior to the course start date. If you have not received either of these please contact the Workforce Development Service directly. Please note that the confirmation will display your accurate course charge, do check this prior to the course.

Please note the following:

  • please check the training venue prior to attending. We run our events at a variety of different training venues, so it is really important that you are aware of where you are meant to be.
  • delegates are advised to arrive 15 minutes before the start time (this allows for registration and refreshment time).
  • late arrivals may be refused entry at the discretion of the trainer and a 'no show' fee will be charged (see late arrivals section).
  • the attendance register must be signed by all delegates. Failure to sign may result in a non-attendance charge being applied.
  • delegates must stay for the full duration of the event and those delegates who leave early will not be presented with a certificate and their professional development record will be marked as 'incomplete' (unless agreed otherwise by the trainer/facilitator) . Full cost of the course will still be applied.
  • It is expected that delegates attending training programmes which run over a number of days or across the three terms of the year, will attend all sessions in the programme. Otherwise cancellation charges will be applied and delegates will not be provided with a certificate.

When you log-on to AfC CPD Online charges will be displayed against the course details relevant to your organisation. For further details regarding charges for individual organisations please contact Workforce Development on 020 8831 6353.

A non-attendance charge will be the full cost of the course and will be applied in all cases where attendees are absent on the training day without prior notification (with the exception of accredited programmes that will be charged at the cost of delivery e.g. Paediatric First Aid)

  • A cancellation charge will be the full cost of the course place and will be applied for cancellations received within 5 working days of the training
  • Please check your booking confirmation for the cost details of your event. If you are a manager please ask to see a copy of your employees email confirmation.

Payment Terms
After the course end date, the organisation will be invoiced for training attended by their member of staff. The payment needs to be made within 30 days from the date of invoice. If there are errors, concerns or questions with regards the invoice received, it is the organisation's responsibility to notify the Workforce Development Service. Notifications such as this must be made within the financial year that the event took place.

Cancellation and non-attendance
If you have booked and received confirmation but are unable to attend an event you must;

  • login to your account on AfC CPD Online and cancel the event.


  • Email the Workforce Development Service providing your name, the course you were due to attend and your cancellation reason.

Please note, we cannot accept cancellations over the phone without an accompanying email to training@achievingforchildren.org.uk

In the case of an emergency please telephone 020 8831 6353. You will be advised to follow up your call with an email.

If you are attending a conference please note that these are charged on an individual basis and have differing cancellation terms and conditions. Please refer to individual conference details on AfC CPD Online for information.

Unforeseen circumstances
It is our policy not to postpone or cancel a course unless:

  • a minimum number of bookings (usually 6) is not received within 5 working days of the start date (please note that this decision is at the discretion of the Workforce Development Service )
  • there are unavoidable circumstances, such as a sudden illness.

If a course has to be cancelled in either of these circumstances all candidates will be contacted via email. It is therefore essential that colleagues registering for a programme of professional development provide relevant up to date contact details.

Late arrivals
If you arrive late for a course or are absent from any session, we reserve the right to refuse you onto the training course, if we feel you will gain insufficient knowledge or skill in the time remaining. In all such cases, the full course fee remains payable and your place maybe offered to those on the reserve list. To conform with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) requirements for our health and safety training, and for you to receive your statutory certificates, attendance for the duration of the event is mandatory.

The Workforce Development Service must be advised of any bookings that require a name change/substitution. Substitutions will only be accepted with the agreement of the Workforce Development Service.

  • if your name is not on the register and you do not have a copy of your substitution confirmation, you may be refused entry and a 'no show' fee will be charged.
  • substitutions cannot be made on any training which is accredited with the exception of Paediatric First Aid.

Requalifications and refreshers
To be eligible to attend any of our requalification or refresher courses, delegates will be asked to present certificates of attendance of prior learning. Please do contact the Workforce Development Team if you would like to discuss your previous learning and for it to be recognised.

Designated training
It is strongly suggested that one person in every organisation should be designated as the lead in each of the following areas:

  • special educational needs
  • equality and diversity
  • health and safety (including paediatric first aid)
  • safeguarding (including signs of safety)
  • behaviour management.

All our events will be evaluated. Delegates will be required to complete a standard evaluation form at the end of each session via the online system. The Workforce Development Service will analyse the evaluations for each programme and report as required to the course providers and heads of service areas, the Local Safeguarding Children Board, Signs of Safety Steering Group and the Workforce Board.

A number of courses / programmes offered will be subject to more in depth impact assessment. This will include follow up evaluation of impact on practice and delegates will be informed of this during the course.
