|Event Introduction||Effective communication provides the bedrock for any meaningful engagement and assessment with children, young people and families. Using knowledge & techniques from a variety of evidenced based approaches it focuses on enhancing the practitioner’s toolkit of skills.
During this training delegates will investigate appropriate models that practitioners can you use to engage children, young people and their families in effective communication. The Relationship Based Practice approach is one model for true partnership working with families and the training will consider how practitioners can utilise this model in their practice. Delegates will explore agenda mapping as a way of structuring effective conversations & meetings.
|Event Content||This session will enable delegates to develop a working understanding of the term ' client resistance' and why this label is often misunderstood and misused. Consideration will be given to the potential ‘traps’ practitioners can fall into when working with young people & families.
Delegates will also cover the following content:
• R.C.I.O. strategy for working with highly resistant service users.
• Principles of effective challenging and probing.
• Understanding the power of appropriate questioning as part of effective communication.
• Understanding empathy as essential to effective. communication & engagement.
• Practice empathy building techniques & skills.
• Understanding & Eliciting change talk as part of effective communication.
• Effective ways of giving feedback to family members (positive & negative).
• Using affirmations to develop effective engagement & assessment.
• Using a losses and gains analysis as a practical approach to enhance communication.
Ted Daszkiewicz has worked with vulnerable & complex families in a variety of settings for over 16 years and has been delivering related training for 10 years to children and family services throughout the UK. He has experience at National level in designing assessment frameworks including most recently the Common Assessment Framework - CAF for children’s services. He was also part of the design team that produced and developed the national CAF & integrated working training materials.

|Event Learning Outcomes||By the end of the session the participant will be able to:
• Enhance their range of knowledge, skills & practical techniques in order to communicate effectively with family members.
• Structure an effective engagement with family members using Agenda Mapping.
• Strengthen their ways of working with client discord (resistance).
• Describe the importance of empathy building and how to communicate this during engagement with family members.
• Challenge & probe family members when the need arises.
• Use affirmations to ensure that engagements & assessments do not become deficit based.
• To give effective & constructive feedback to family members.
