How to complete and manage a COSHH Assessment

Event Introduction According to the Health and Safety Executive “Most businesses use substances, or products that are mixtures of substances. Some processes create substances. These could cause harm to employees, contractors and other people.
Sometimes substances are easily recognised as harmful. Common substances such as paint, bleach or dust from natural materials may also be harmful.” (Health and Safety Executive, http://www.hse.gov.uk/coshh/basics.htm).
A Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) assessment concentrates on the hazards and risks from substances in the workplace and constitutes a key element of an organisation’s overall risk assessing. Some schools and settings will undertake their own COSHH Assessments and some will commission this work to be done for them. In either case the organisation will need to know what is involved in order to ensure that the COSHH Assessment that is carried out is sufficient, meets requirements and protects both the workforce and children.

The session will equip delegates with up to date information on how to remain compliant. This session is appropriate for premises managers, owners, office staff and all those who would come into contact with substances which may be hazardous to health, and those completing risk assessments.


Event Content This half day training will provide an introduction to COSHH and the COSHH regulations. It will help delegates to be aware of potential health problems which could arise. Delegates will learn how to identify hazardous substances and to understand what controls need to be put in action within the workplace.

This course will help those who are responsible for completing and maintaining COSHH Assessments, or managing the contract of those who complete the COSHH Assessment and need to be able to quality assure the documentation.
There will be practical work on the completion of a COSHH Assessment using templates which will give delegates the confidence to understand the process and the level of information and control required. Delegates are also encouraged to bring a copy of their own COSHH Assessment to use in the practical sessions.

Following completion of the course, delegates will be more equipped to meeting COSHH legislation. Delegates who have previously attended this course noted the difference it will make to their role: “Make me more aware of risks that didn’t seem relevant. Also ensure that paperwork is up to date so that in an emergency the correct information is available.”

This course is being delivered by RB Health and Safety Solutions Ltd. We have extensive knowledge of the subject and this training is delivered by professional Health and Safety Consultants who have extensive experience in implementing and auditing COSHH Management systems in childcare and school settings. All trainers teaching this course hold professional qualifications in Health and Safety (i.e. NEBOSH or equivalent).
