eLearning: Cultural Awareness

Culture can describe beliefs, behaviours and traits of an ethnic, social or age demographic. The cultural background of any individual will impact on how they interact with others.

A number of recent Serious Case Reviews (SCRs) have highlighted that professionals working with families may benefit from being upskilled in their knowledge and understanding of working with families from different cultural backgrounds. Learning from these reviews will feed into this course and in doing so the facilitator will aim to build on delegates' understanding of how cultural background will influence the ...

Learning from Practice

Working together 2018 sets out that the child protection processes in England involve a ‘complex multi-agency system with many different organisations and individuals playing their part. Reflecting on how well that system is working is critical as we constantly seek to improve our collective public service response to children and their families.’

Since 2016 in AfC we have carried out various learning lessons reviews and these have been held jointly with partners in the Kingston and Richmond Children Safeguarding partnership (previously LSCB) or single agency internal reviews.

Therapeutic Life Story Work (Windsor & Maidenhead)

‘In July 2019, Adoption UK’s adoption barometer found that 27% of new adopters felt that they had not been given all the information they needed about their child or children. Nearly half of new adopters (46%) did not receive their child’s life story book (or equivalent) within statutory timescales and 34% described their child’s life story materials as somewhat or very inadequate. The report stated that where preparation or information sharing had not been thorough, the impact could be devastating – even to the point of placement breakdown. (Community Care, 2020)
