LSCP Working with Race, Culture and Belief Systems in the Context of Professional Curiosity

Professional curiosity is described as thinking beyond a single source of information and considering, holistically, the circumstances of the child and family. It requires asking questions, verifying and checking information, as well as not making assumptions or accepting things at face value.

“While the presence of a potential indicator of neglect does not necessarily mean that a child is being neglected, it will always warrant further investigation. Practitioners must be ‘professionally curious’ to determine further information in the interests of the child. It is essential that professio ...

Lunch and Learn Session: SEN and Education, Health and Care Plans (Windsor and Maidenhead) (Cancelled)

This is a one hour session on every Friday for all Windsor and Maidenhead AFC Staff to come together, share best practice, and refresh knowledge.

In Achieving for Children we think it is really important that teams and services are able to meet up regularly. What sets this concept apart from other courses is the accessibility and less framed structure of this approach.

The lunch and learn session are important, not just to share a level of expertise but they enable two way, regular communications among employees from different parts of AFC. With practitioner attendance we will be able t ...

Fabrication or Induction of Illness in Children: Effective Recognition & Response

Whilst many studies have identified that child maltreatment due to abuse or neglect is pervasive, less is known about fabricated or induced illness by parents and carers (FII) which is considered to be a rarer form of child abuse.

The term FII was introduced in the UK by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) in 2001 and subsequently adopted by the Department of Health. In 2008 statutory safeguarding guidance was provided for professionals to address FII. Commonly the term FII is used when describing various types of abuse which involve a child being presented for medic ...

Supervision Skills: Providing Effective Reflective Supervision (Windsor & Maidenhead)

This course is designed for supervisors who provide supervision to frontline staff. Providing the space and time to reflect on practice is a key driver for this provision, as stated in the Munro Review; ‘it is as though the confluence of the search for certainty in detecting and eradicating abuse and neglect, combined with the belief (and management oversight) that following rules will further reduce the risk of missing a case, has replaced the space of reflection on professional judgement which actually protect children and young people’ (Munro Review of Child, 2010).

This course will refr ...
