Action Learning Set (Continuing to Lead and Inspire)

Event/course Code SFVSS 18/112
Event/course type Action Learning Set
Event Introduction These Action Learning Sets form part of the Continuing to Lead and Inspire programme for front line managers. The content was devised in collaboration with senior leadership teams and an experienced Consultant Social Work Trainer. Each session has been commissioned to meet the gap in skills, knowledge, confidence and competence that have been identified. The programme consists of 3 days training plus action learning sets and coaching sessions. The programme has been devised specifically for managers of teams that work directly with children and young people. Delegates are expected to attend every session.

Action Learning Sets are a core component of the Continuing to Lead and Inspire programme, as they assist the manager's development, particularly with work-based challenges that don't necessarily have an immediate solution.
Event Content 'Action learning is a method for individual and organisational development. Working in small groups, people tackle important organisational issues or problems and learn from their attempts to change things. Action learning brings people together to exchange, support and challenge each other in seeking to act and learn' (Mike Pedler, 1996).

All delegates attending the Continuing to Lead and Inspire programme will sign up to an Action Learning Set at the beginning and remain with this group for the duration of the programme. Each set lasts for 2 hours and is facilitated by Richard Swann. An action learning set is proactive way of solution focused learning that can improve productivity and morale in the workplace. Action learning groups may help practitioners to problem solve, cope with stress and help motivate and develop resiliency skills.

The process involves the following stages:
• Everyone briefly 'checks in', i.e.describes how things are for them at work,
• One person elects to describe a work-based problem/challenge as they see it,
• Others within the set provide contributions in the form of questions (Richard will write these down),
• The presenter then reflects on the discussion and decides what action to take,
• At the next set the presenter reports back on what happened when they took action and reflects on the problem-solving process and how well it is working,
• Everyone briefly 'checks out' i.e. how they feel now, what was useful about the process.

Ensuring that Action Learning is a key element of the programme has reinforced delegates learning and ensured that the groups form strong, safe networks.
Event Learning Outcomes By the end of an action learning, delegates will have:

• Understood the roles and responsibilities associated to an action learning set
• Contributed to the session in the form of questions
• Reflected on discussions and their own practice
• Collectively discussed what action to take
