Safer Recruitment (Multi-agency)

Event/course Code EDU 21/1104
Event/course type Training course
Event Introduction Research, experience and learning from serious case reviews illustrates the importance of strong and effective recruitment and selection procedures that help deter, reject or identify people who might abuse children, or who are otherwise unsuited to working with them. If you recruit staff and/or volunteers into the children and young people’s workforce, you should be trained in safer recruitment practices.

Organisations that provide services to children must incorporate these measures into their processes to remain safe, making safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children an integral part of human resources (HR) management in organisations that work with children is an essential part of creating safe environments. The need for this was illustrated by the Soham case and the findings and recommendations contained in Sir Michael Bichard’s report into that case (2004).

Please note this is not intended to be a comprehensive workshop on staff recruitment and selection but on how safer recruitment fits within the wider context of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
Event Content This training programme is accredited and updated by the safer Recruitment Consortium. The Safer Recruitment Consortium is a partnership between four organisations with the safety and wellbeing of children at their heart:
• The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC)
• The Lucy Faithfull Foundation
• The National Association of Independent Schools & Non-Maintained Special Schools (NASS)
• Child Protection in Education (CAPE)

Representatives of these organisations have been working together, in consultation with the Department for Education (DfE), since January 2014 to ensure that schools, Further Education (FE) colleges and other education providers have access to high quality, up to date Safer Recruitment training.

This is a full day programme and consists of four modules.

Session 1 sets safer recruitment within the wider context of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. It examines the scale of abuse; some aspects of the characteristics of abusers and the detail of how abusers typically operate within organisations.

Session 2 focuses on the recruitment process through to the shortlisting stage.

Session 3 considers the importance of making the right decisions, using a variety of selection activities including structured interviews, as well as pre-employment checks on the candidate selected for appointment.

Session 4 examines the need for ongoing awareness and vigilance and considers how schools/academies can develop and maintain an environment that deters and prevents abuse and challenges inappropriate behaviour.

On completion of this course organisations can be confident that they are able to meet their statutory duties. They will be better prepared to implement recruitment and selection procedures that help deter, reject or identify people who might abuse children, or who are otherwise unsuited to working with them. This session will always be delivered by at last one Safer Recruitment Consortium approved trainer.
Event Learning Outcomes By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

• Demonstrate an understanding of offender behaviour.
• Identify the key features of staff recruitment that help deter or prevent the appointment of unsuitable people.
• Consider policies and practice that minimise opportunities for abuse or ensure its prompt reporting.
• Help participants begin to review their policies and practice in recruitment with a view to creating a safer culture.
