LSCB: Understanding & Managing Childhood Neglect

Neglect has been referred to as the most serious type of child maltreatment and the least understood. It is often under reported and underestimated in terms of the consequences for children. Neglect is a complex issue that presents many challenges for practitioners, not least a shared understanding and effective co-ordination of interventions across different services. Children who have been abused or neglected may experience physical or emotional harm. The effects can be short term but sometimes they last into adulthood. If someone has been abused as a child, it is more likely that they will ...

LSCB Working with Difficult, Evasive & Challenging Families

Both national and local serious case reviews and lessons learnt reviews have highlighted situations where professionals have delayed or avoided safeguarding interventions because of challenging, difficult or evasive behaviour by parents or carers.

The Serious Case Review into the death of Daniel Pelka (2013) challenged workers to ‘think the unthinkable’ and to ‘believe and act upon what they saw in front of them, rather than accept parental versions of what was happening at home without robust challenge’. However difficult and challenging behaviour by parents & carers, by its very nature, m ...

LSCB Child Sexual Abuse

Research in general populations consistently tells us that sexual abuse is a relatively common type of harm, affecting around 10 - 11% of people in childhood. Its impact on child and adult well-being can be pervasive and enduring. Despite its prevalence, sexual abuse is under-reported, under-represented in child protection populations, and there are significant barriers to children disclosing it to professionals.

This one-day multi-agency programme will develop participants’ knowledge of the signs and impact of sexual abuse, and how to respond effectively to children at some key stages of t ...
