The removal of national curriculum levels has afforded schools great freedom to assess pupils using their chosen methodology, beyond the statutory assessment points. However, with this freedom comes the anxiety about pupil progress, which is particularly felt across KS2. Following a successful trial during the spring term we are pleased to offer a further summer term Year 4 writing cluster meeting. These meetings aim to develop consistency of judgement in teacher assessment and to provide a benchmark for writing midway through KS2.

Getting to grips with the Education Inspection Framework

Ofsted’s Education Inspection Framework came into effect in September 2019. The aim of the framework is to refocus inspections of schools to make sure that learners receive a high-quality education, through the school’s rich curriculum offer.

HMCI Amanda Spielman, said, ‘The new framework puts the real substance of education at the heart of inspection and supports leaders and teachers who act with integrity. We hope early years, schools and college leaders will no longer feel the need to generate and analyse masses of internal data for inspection. Instead, we want them to spend their time t ...

EIF: Exploring the Outstanding Judgement

Ofsted’s new Education Inspection Framework (EIF) came into effect in September 2019. To meet the ‘outstanding’ criteria under the EIF, schools must first meet ALL aspects of the ‘good’ criteria consistently and securely and then the additional ‘outstanding’ criteria. This heralds a shift from the ‘best fit’ approach used for the ‘outstanding’ criteria in the previous framework.

Under the last framework, mainstream schools previously rated ‘outstanding’ were exempt from routine inspection unless safeguarding or other serious concerns were raised. Of the 253 “exempt” schools inspected in 20 ...

New to EYFS Leadership

Maintained schools and academies and non-association independent schools that have Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provision are given a separate grade for that provision as part of school inspections conducted under section 5 of the Education Act 2005 (as amended by the Education Act 2011). This contributes to the judgement about the overall effectiveness of the school. EYFS leaders play a key role in this, currently there is a greater focus on middle and subject leaders in Ofsted inspections.

With a renewed focus on early learning and separate Ofsted judgements for EYFS, this course ...
