SPARK Year 4 Writing Remote Judging Session Summer Term (Cancelled)

The removal of national curriculum levels has afforded schools great freedom to assess pupils using their chosen methodology, beyond the statutory assessment points. However, with this freedom comes the anxiety about pupil progress, which is particularly felt across KS2. Following a successful trial during the spring term we are pleased to offer a further summer term Year 4 writing cluster meeting. These meetings aim to develop consistency of judgement in teacher assessment and to provide a benchmark for writing midway through KS2.

This session is for teachers who have already used compara ...

New to Year 6 Assessment

Every school has responsibility for making robust judgements for end of key stage statutory assessment. At the end of key stage one, teachers make a judgement in reading, mathematics, writing and science using teacher assessment frameworks and statutory tests (SATs). These frameworks set out the standard a pupil will be assessed against and the methodology for making judgements.

This course is designed to support teachers who are new to Year 6, returning to Year 6 following a break, or less experienced teachers. It is structured to support teachers in understanding the statements in the tea ...

Middle leaders – understanding your role in the context of the new Ofsted framework

What do the recent changes to the Education Inspection Framework mean for your school and for your middle leaders? In the past, middle leaders were seen as a ‘buffer’ or ‘broker’, an implementer of school policy. There has been a dramatic shift in this thinking, and now inspection practice highlight middle leaders as being:

• Leaders of the curriculum
• Accountable for pupil achievement
• Responsible for the development and monitoring of the quality of teaching and learning
• Experts in the analysis and reporting of data
• Role models for a culture of professional learning in their team ...

Leading Reading

The teaching of reading has developed over the last twenty years; with considerable research and changes in the national education landscape, alongside ever changing social and cultural needs for reading. Teachers are balancing the need to develop a love of reading, which research has proven to have a direct impact on later life chances, with the requirements of the classroom and accountability measures.

Leaders need time to consider all aspects of teaching reading; with the associated requirements of the national curriculum, assessment frameworks, Ofsted and their own communities - to forg ...

Getting to grips with the new Ofsted Framework – is your school ready?

Ofsted’s new Education Inspection Framework came into effect in September 2019. The aim of the new framework is to refocus inspections of schools to make sure that learners receive a high-quality education, through the school’s rich curriculum offer.

HMCI Amanda Spielman, said, ‘The new framework puts the real substance of education at the heart of inspection and supports leaders and teachers who act with integrity. We hope early years, schools and college leaders will no longer feel the need to generate and analyse masses of internal data for inspection.

Instead, we want them to spend ...

Curriculum Design in Primary Schools

We know that Ofsted’s Education Inspection Framework 2019 has brought the curriculum into sharp focus. The framework states that inspectors will explore:

• "how carefully leaders have thought about what endpoints the curriculum is building towards, what pupils will be able to know and do at those endpoints, and how they have planned the curriculum accordingly".
• "how leaders have sequenced the curriculum to enable pupils to build their knowledge and skills towards agreed endpoints".
• "how leaders have ensured that the subject curriculum contains content which has been identified as most ...
