SPARK Year 4 Writing Remote Judging Session Summer Term (Cancelled)

The removal of national curriculum levels has afforded schools great freedom to assess pupils using their chosen methodology, beyond the statutory assessment points. However, with this freedom comes the anxiety about pupil progress, which is particularly felt across KS2. Following a successful trial during the spring term we are pleased to offer a further summer term Year 4 writing cluster meeting. These meetings aim to develop consistency of judgement in teacher assessment and to provide a benchmark for writing midway through KS2.

This session is for teachers who have already used compara ...

New to EYFS Leadership

Maintained schools and academies and non-association independent schools that have Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provision are given a separate grade for that provision as part of school inspections conducted under section 5 of the Education Act 2005 (as amended by the Education Act 2011). This contributes to the judgement about the overall effectiveness of the school. EYFS leaders play a key role in this, currently there is a greater focus on middle and subject leaders in Ofsted inspections.

With a renewed focus on early learning and separate Ofsted judgements for EYFS, this course s ...

Essential Mathematics Knowledge for Teaching Assistants and Learning Support Assistants (Teaching Assistants)

In 2018 the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) produced a Guidance Report designed to help provide practical evidence-based guidance to help schools make the best use of teaching assistants. Drawing on evidence, the EEF revealed that the “typical deployment and use of TAs*, under everyday conditions, is not leading to improvements in academic outcomes”. However, EEF trials have demonstrated that, when they are well-trained and used in structured settings with high-quality support and training, TAs can make a noticeable positive impact on pupil learning.

Teaching assistants who regularly s ...

Keep It Simple: Observation, Assessment and Planning

Ongoing assessment (also known as formative assessment) is an integral part of the learning and development process. It involves practitioners observing children to understand their level of achievement, interests and learning styles, and to then shape learning experiences for each child reflecting those observations.’ (Statutory framework for the early years foundation stage, April 2017)

This course will explore the observation, assessment and planning cycle looking at how to minimise paperwork and ensure that children’s learning and development needs are met.

This course is suitable fo ...

‘I’m Not Messy, I’m Creative’ - Creativity Takes Courage

This course seeks to challenge practitioners’ perceptions of creativity and how we can develop this in all children. It will also identify the different ways in which groups of learners can be creative. The ‘Expressive Arts and Design’ area of learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) focuses on the processes children undertake rather than a finished product and looks at creativity in its widest sense.

The Education Inspection Framework states that inspectors will consider how well “children develop, consolidate and deepen their knowledge, understanding and skills across all the a ...

Teaching Phonics in KS2

Teaching phonics is an integral part of the primary curriculum and an essential skill in learning to read. High quality phonics teaching can secure pupil outcomes in both reading and writing but relies upon secure practitioner subject knowledge. When pupils do not secure these skills in Key Stage 1, it becomes increasingly difficult for them to engage with the demands of the key stage two curriculum. Closing this gap and learning the essential skills that systematic synthetic phonics can teach, is of paramount importance.

However, many teachers and teaching assistants in Key Stage 2 have no ...
