|Event Introduction||Young people’s right to participate in decisions that have a direct impact on their lives is enshrined in Article 12 of the United Nations Conventions for the Rights of the Child (UNCRC, 1989). This interactive training session explores practical methods of how to meaningfully and effectively involve children and young people in care and leaving care in making key decisions around the services that are provided for them.
This session aims to achieve this by using real life case studies, workshops and a range of different activities to encourage debate. Delegates will explore the potential issues that children and young people encounter. The session will investigate possible solutions to overcome these issues in a fun and dynamic way. The session is aimed at all professionals who are involved with children and young people (CYP) in care and leaving care. This course is co-facilitated by young people who have or are experiencing life as a looked after child.
|Event Content||The day will consist of two parts:
The morning session will focus on exploring the rights of CYP and how advocacy benefits CYP in care. Delegates will explore the legislative framework regarding CYP involvement using the UNCRC and the Government’s Positive for Youth. Consideration will be given to how policy and practice has had an impact on the lives of CYP and consider new ways of involving them in the development of new policies. The session will give attention to the practical strategies which can be adopted to involve CYP in the decisions making at different levels. Delegates will be introduced to the National Advocacy Standards and gain an increased awareness of what is meant by advocacy and how this can be applied in daily practice.
During the afternoon session practitioners will explore how they can improve their practice when involving CYP when making decisions during their review meetings and writing of Child Protection Plans, Pathway Plans and Transition Plans. Effective communication is essential when working with CYP and delegates will evaluate the use of language and how professional jargon can be a barrier to CYP involvement. Consideration will be given to how CYP feel when they are excluded from being involved in decisions that have an impact on their lives.

|Event Learning Outcomes||By the end of the session delegates will be able to:
• Explore ways of improving participatory practice of professionals in decision making meetings.
• Identify ways to challenge disadvantage, discrimination and exploitation in order to achieve equality in involving CYP in care.
• Analyse how policy and practice have an impact on the lives of CYP in care.
• Evaluate Harts ladder of participation to identify opportunities within your service for CYP to participate in a meaningful way.
• Compare key skills for effective negotiation and consider the boundaries and barriers to negotiation.
• Identify how it feels from a young person’s perspective how it feels to be excluded and how the use of jargon can effectively prohibit a young person from effectively participating.
• Analyse the Nationals Advocacy Standards and how they bring added value to working practice with CYP in care.
