|Event Introduction||This course is *NEW for 2018* and intended for any practitioner working with children and young people with complex needs and significant communication difficulties.
We will discuss the various visual strategies that you can use to support and enhance the communication of children and young people who are predominantly non-verbal, including: Makaton, Picture Exchange Communication Systems (PECS), Aided Language Displays, Pragmatic Organisation Dynamic Display (PODD) books and high-tech communication aids.
The course will equip attendees with practical opportunities to use these approaches and brainstorm how they can be used with the children and young people they are working with.
This course is run by the Hounslow and Richmond NHS Trust Early Years Speech and language therapy team.
|Event Content||Many children and young people with significant communication difficulties are able to use alternative means of communication to express themselves. These children may have a communication book with pictures, or a high-tech communication device, or they may use signs or other methods to communicate. This course is designed to provide an introduction and an overview of some of these communication methods, and explain why some children find these visual methods easier and more effective to use than speech.
We will describe each of the following approaches, and provide you with practical opportunities to use them: Makaton, PECS, Aided Language Displays, PODD books, high-tech devices.
The course would be particularly suitable for practitioners who are supporting children and young people outside of the school setting, e.g. support workers and respite workers. It would also be suitable for school-based staff who may be working with children who already have an alternative communication method and wish to increase their confidence with using it.
The course will be delivered by experienced Speech and Language Therapists who work with minimally verbal children and young people. You will have the opportunity to ask questions about particular children you are working with and how best you can support and enhance their communication in your settings.
The course is delivered using a range of methods, including visual, written, small group discussion and lots of practical opportunities; all incorporated to suit different learning styles. The Speech and Language team will ensure that delegates attending this training are able to take away meaningful information to inform their practice.
|Event Learning Outcomes||By the end of this course delegates will:
• Have increased knowledge of a range of different visual methods which can be used to support communication.
• Understand why children who are minimally verbal may use these methods.
• Rate themselves as more confident in using a range of visual communication methods.
• Rate themselves as more confident in supporting and enhancing the communication of the children and young people they work with.
