|Event Introduction||According to research by the National Literacy Trust, language and literacy skills have a huge impact on a child’s life outcomes. For example, children born into communities with the most serious literacy challenges have some of the lowest life expectancies in England. (Literacy and life expectancy report, February 2018).
The 2017 government report ‘Unlocking Talent, Fulfilling Potential’ acknowledges the ‘word gap’ – that exists in early years between children of different economic backgrounds.
Providing rich opportunities for stories, rhymes and poems is an essential element of high quality early years practice. These inclusive learning opportunities directly lay the foundations for language and literacy skills, helping the development of wide vocabulary and supporting all round development.
This workshop will help those working with children to be able to support the children's development and to engage and support parents to enjoy stories rhymes and poems with their children.
|Event Content||Research tells us that sharing stories, rhyme and poems enhances children's development and helps develop a love of reading for pleasure. Story sacks were first developed by Neil Griffiths in 1995, in response to research suggesting that just half the number of children were being read a bedtime story as in their parents’ generation. Story sacks and poetry pockets are a great way of involving and inspiring children and parents to enjoy spending time together with a story or rhyme.
They are a hands-on learning opportunity and a fantastic tool for developing a love of stories and reading for pleasure as well as providing stimulating learning opportunities.
During the session, the facilitator will demonstrate the benefits of story sacks and poetry pockets for developing a love of reading and words and of 'being together’ in a stimulating and enjoyable activity.
The training will be classroom based, but the facilitator will ensure that practitioners experience story sacks and poetry pockets and have a chance to plan the development of their own resources.
This half day training will incorporate a variety of training methods including 1:1 work, small and large group work, presentations, DVDs, and practical sessions.
Rosalind Millam is a qualified early years practitioner, manager, assessor, verifier and trainer. She has worked as a freelance trainer for many years delivering training for early years settings, childminders, local authorities and national organisations.
