|Event Introduction||“The governing board’s third core function is to oversee financial performance and make sure money is well spent. It should do this by ensuring it has at least one individual with specific, relevant skills and experience of financial matters. However, everyone on the board should have a basic understanding of the financial cycle and the legal requirements of the school on accountability and spend. “(Governance handbook January 2017, DfE)
This workshop is for both those new to the role of school governor and those governors seeking to refresh their knowledge of the role. It covers local and national responsibilities and is designed to be useful to governors from both maintained schools and academies/free schools.
It is advisable that if you are new to school finance or governorship that you attend the School Funding Briefing before attending this 2 part workshop.
Please note: This course is fully funded for any schools that subscribe to Premium SPARK package or stand-alone governor support.
|Event Content||The series of workshops run over two evenings aims to equip governors with a basic knowledge of a governor's responsibilities regarding schools revenue funding; school funding and budget setting and monitoring.
The workshop will be a combination of PowerPoint presentation and interactive discussion. Candidates will be asked to participate in group tasks and between sessions relate information given to their own school. During group discussions candidates are encouraged to share examples of individual school practices.
Delegates do not need to have any prior understanding of finance to attend. The session will recap the funding formula used to calculate a schools budget and the limitations that an authority has in funding individual schools.
Workshops will walk candidates through the criteria of school budget setting and the areas that a governor should be concerned with. As well as introduce the delegates to important documents; scheme for financing schools, schools financial value standards and benchmarking, consideration is given to the differences between maintained, free schools academies as well as the areas of similarity.
The workshop will be delivered by experienced members of the School Finance Team, Achieving for Children.
|Event Learning Outcomes||By the end of the two sessions:
• Delegates will be able to name the major funding streams for maintained schools, academies and free schools at the 'name of grant' level.
• Delegates will be able to explain the difference between funding from the local authority and the education funding agency and which type of school receives which.
• Delegates will be able to define a funding cycle for their own school; maintained academy or free school.
• Delegates will be able to explain the difference between funding re-allocation and a virement.
• Delegates will be able to differentiate between the responsibilities of Governor, School SLT and school staff.
