Clerks’ Briefing (Governors)

Event/course Code EDU 18/330
Event/course type Briefing
Event Introduction The clerk’s role is fundamental to the smooth running of the governing boards. The Department for Education recognises that professional-quality clerking is critical to the effectiveness of a governing board in fulfilling its core strategic functions.

To assist clerks in delivering the responsibilities of the role, Achieving for Children provide a termly clerks’ briefing meeting. This is aimed at current clerks serving Kingston and Richmond school governing bodies. The aim of the termly briefing is to support excellent governance in all schools across the two boroughs. It is an opportunity for clerks to meet, network and share information and good practice.

Meetings take place on a termly basis. There are two meetings per day - one morning meeting and one evening meeting to ensure as many clerks as possible are able to attend.

Please note: This course is fully funded for any schools that subscribe to premium spark package or stand-alone governor support.
Event Content The meetings will consist of a combination of presentations from Achieving for Children Officers, outside partners and group work to support sharing of best practice among schools. It is a great opportunity for clerks to hear current messages on national and local priorities.

The content will vary in response to changes in governance procedures and education policy, but will cover a broad range of both local and national issues and topics. These may include: education funding, Ofsted inspections, Pupil Premium grant, school place planning, SEN, Safeguarding, school improvement, clerk training opportunities and much more.

Sessions will support professional development for clerking practice and give opportunities for clerks to share their own governing body’s good practice and issues.

Clerks are always encouraged to shape the agenda by sending in suggestions/recommendations to the Governor Support team.
Event Learning Outcomes This termly Clerk’s Briefing will enable clerks to :

• Demonstrate awareness of current educational matters
• Describe governance duties following topical presentations and discussions.
• Identify and share best practice
• Support schools in raising the attainment levels and overall effectiveness of their schools.
