eLearning: Unconscious Bias

Event/course Code EDU 20/368
Event/course type E-learning
Event Introduction Biases are inclinations that people hold towards a particular idea, individual, group or belief. They can cause us to act favourably or unfavourably towards groups of people based on characteristics that we perceive them to possess. Unconscious bias is not intentional but it can affect everyday decisions and interactions.

At Achieving for Children, we are committed to valuing difference and diversity in our workforce and in the children and families we work with, so that their identities are promoted and their individual needs can be met.

This elearning course gives a clear insight into the development and impact of unconscious bias, and provides an understanding of the benefits of awareness.

This course is intended for staff who work in all sectors of business. It provides information and advice to help employees become more aware of their own unconscious biases, as well as for employers to minimise unconscious bias in the workplace.

After you have signed up via CPD Online, you will receive a separate enrolment email via Me Learning with the link to the elearning course.
Event Content We all have some unconscious biases. However, in the workplace, these can affect decisions around recruitment, staff development and recognition, which can all lead to a less diverse and productive workforce.

Recognising and identifying these unconscious biases are the first step to overcoming them. By reflecting on possible biases, individuals can start to challenge them and introduce steps to reduce and eliminate bias from their actions.

Some of the topics covered in this course are:
• What is bias?
• Unconscious bias; where unconscious bias can have an effect
• How do we develop biases?
• How bias affects the business
• How to address unconscious bias
• Employer’s responsibilities
• Whistleblowing

In order to receive their certificate, delegates will need to complete all sections of the eLearning course and the evaluation.
Event Learning Outcomes On completion of this course, delegates will be able to:

• Recognise the different types of unconscious bias.
• Understand how to be more in control of their own unconscious biases.
• Identify bias and consider the effects on yourself and others.
• Identify ways to reduce unconscious bias, including in the workplace.
• Refer to the legislation surrounding unconscious bias.
