Event Introduction The Signs of Safety model is a tool intended to help practitioners with risk assessment and safety planning in child protection cases. Created by Andrew Turnell and Steve Edwards in Western Australia during the 1990s, Signs of Safety is now used in at least 12 different countries across Australasia, North America and Europe.

AfC will be implementing Signs of Safety across the entire workforce and through the child's journey from the Single Point of Access through to adoption. The way in which Child Protection Conferences are conducted will change to embrace the ethos of Signs of Safety. These Mock Conferences will be provide you with a great insight into how the change conferences will look in the future.

This workshop is for all social workers and colleagues from Education, Police, Health and the voluntary sector who regularly attend and contribute to Child Protection Conferences. All delegates must have attended the two day Signs of Safety Foundation Course or the Briefing prior to attending this workshop.
Event Content This will be a fun and interactive workshop where everyone is expected to participate. Delegates will have the opportunity, in a safe space, to go through the key elements of the conference meeting from beginning to end.

The purpose of Signs of Safety is to enable practitioners across different disciplines to work collaboratively and in partnership with families and children, a key element of a conference.

It is expected that each delegate will take on various roles such as the family, child/young person, Police officer, Teacher, Health Visitor, School Nurse, GP etc. The facilitator will guide the delegates at every stage of the Conference to provide space to reflect and discuss the process.

Cases studies will be anonymised but will be previously open cases to give delegates to true sense of the issues children and their families face and how we can work differently using Signs of Safety.

It is strongly recommended that you attend these workshops if you are a regular contributor to conferences. There are dates available every quarter.
Event Learning Outcomes The workshop is relevant to all social workers and partners who regularly attend Child Protection Conferences and will provide the opportunity for everyone to practice the approach before attending a live Child Protection Conference with parents/carers and children and young people.

By the end of the workshop delegates will:

• Demonstrate application of the signs of safety model at child protection conferences.
• Develop use of simple language.
• Support in a consistent professional language and reporting across agencies.
